iPhone 14 Pro Max
The iPhone 14 Pro Max isn’t just another smartphone; it’s a technological marvel that redefines what a phone can be. With the ingenious new Dynamic Island for notifications and live activities, it’s a joy to use. Coupled with outstanding cameras, including a groundbreaking 48MP primary camera, an always-on display, an engaging Action mode for videos, and exceptional battery life, this device offers tremendous value for its price.
Design: Bold and Refined
From the moment we unboxed the iPhone 14 Pro Max, two design changes stood out. First, the notch has been replaced with a pill-shaped cutout, and second, the camera bump has grown larger than ever. The back of the device is dominated by the significantly bigger flash and three camera lenses. This phone is slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor, measuring 6.33 x 3.05 x 0.31 inches and weighing 8.47 ounces (compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s 6.33 x 3.07 x 0.3 inches and 8.46 ounces).
Available in four stunning colors—deep purple, silver, gold, and space black—the iPhone 14 Pro Max exudes a premium feel.
Meet Dynamic Island: A Game-Changer
Dynamic Island is more than just a smaller notch; it’s a creative breakthrough. Apple transformed this space into a functional and enjoyable mini-dashboard that houses the TrueDepth camera and displays essential information regardless of the app you’re using. From tracking your timer to navigating in Maps, Dynamic Island seamlessly integrates with various applications, making it a standout feature that sets the iPhone 14 Pro Max apart from the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.
Always-On Display and Screen Quality
While Apple may have lagged behind Android in introducing an always-on display, the iPhone 14 Pro Max makes up for it with intelligence. The display turns off when placed in a pocket or facedown on a table, and it’s incredibly convenient to glance at the time without fully waking the device.
The Super Retina XDR display is as vibrant as it gets, with a brightness rating of up to 1,600 nits with HDR content and 2,000 nits in direct sunlight. In our tests, the iPhone 14 Pro Max reached 1,565 nits, close to Apple’s claims, outperforming both the iPhone 13 Pro Max (1,040 nits) and the Galaxy S22 Ultra (1,359 nits).
Cameras: Redefining Mobile Photography
Apple has raised the bar with the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s camera system, introducing a 48MP wide sensor for the first time. This sensor clusters every four pixels into a quad-pixel configuration, optimizing light capture in 12MP images. The camera also offers a new 2x zoom option alongside the 12MP 3x telephoto zoom lens. While the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s 10x dual optical setup provides higher zoom capabilities, the iPhone 14 Pro Max delivers unparalleled image quality. To capture 48MP photos, you’ll need to enable Apple ProRaw and adjust the ProRaw resolution in the Settings app.
After testing, we confidently say the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the best camera phone on the market.
Performance: Unmatched Speed and Efficiency
Powered by the A16 Bionic chip, Apple’s first processor built on a 4-nanometer process, the iPhone 14 Pro Max delivers industry-leading performance. The CPU is 10% faster than its predecessor, the A15 Bionic, and benefits from 50% more memory bandwidth, making gaming and multitasking smoother than ever.
In Geekbench 5 tests, the iPhone 14 Pro Max scored 1,882 in single-core and 5,333 in multi-core performance, significantly outpacing the iPhone 13 Pro Max and outperforming the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 in the Galaxy Z Fold 4. However, the base storage of 128GB feels limited, especially for those who plan to capture 48MP photos, 4K videos, or store large games.
Battery Life and Charging: Long-Lasting but Slow to Recharge
The iPhone 14 Pro Max impresses with a battery life of up to 13 hours and 39 minutes, placing it near the top of our battery life rankings. However, the 20W charging speed lags behind competitors, taking 30 minutes to charge the device to 50%.
Emergency SOS via Satellite and Crash Detection: Safety First
Apple introduced two critical safety features with the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The first is Emergency SOS via satellite, which connects to satellites when you’re out of Wi-Fi or cellular range, allowing you to share your location with Find My or contact emergency services. This feature is free for three years after activation.
The second is Crash Detection, which uses the iPhone 14’s enhanced accelerometer and gyroscope to detect if you’re in a car accident. In such an event, your iPhone can automatically notify emergency contacts and call for help.
iOS 16: A Seamless Experience
Running on iOS 16 out of the box, the iPhone 14 Pro Max benefits from a range of new features. You can customize your lock screen with widgets, photos, and other elements, which also appear on the always-on display. The upcoming iOS 16.2 update will introduce Freeform, a collaboration tool for real-time brainstorming across Apple devices.
Price: Premium Cost for Premium Features
Starting at $1,099, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is one of the most expensive flagship phones available. While 128GB of storage feels limited, you can upgrade to 256GB for $1,199, 512GB for $1,399, or 1TB for $1,599.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is a powerful device that combines professional-level features with user-friendly design. It’s an investment, but for those seeking the best smartphone experience, it truly delivers.
